about the company
monica hogan danceworks is a project-based contemporary dance company based in Atlanta, GA, after nearly a decade in New York City. Led by Executive Artistic Director Monica Hogan Thysell, the company is known for its intentional, athletic movement and stylistic virtuosity — blending influences from Hogan’s background in ballet, modern, jazz, and theater to create works that are both technically grounded and emotionally resonant.
MHDW’s work explores themes of the shared human experience with clarity, nuance, and play. Critics have praised the company for its polish and professionalism (Atlanta Journal-Constitution) and for Hogan’s “well-crafted and rewarding choreography” (ArtsATL).
The company has presented work on national and international stages and screens, including venues such as Ailey Citigroup Theater, DUMBO Dance Festival, Salvatore Capezio Theatre, Gelsey Kirkland Arts Center, CoolNY Dance Festival, NY Jazz Choreography Project, Dixon Place, and Actor’s Fund Arts Center (NYC); City Springs Theater, Aurora Theater, Modern Atlanta Dance Festival, Dance Canvas, Emory Performing Arts Studio, Georgia Tech Ferst Center for the Arts (GA); Triangle Dance Festival for AIDS (NC); and Xuzhou and Tianjin Concert Halls (China).
MHDW engages the local Atlanta community through workshops, open rehearsals, and inclusive programming that invites reflection, connection, and joy.
